I am a huge fan of the iterative approach to building IoT products and services.
I recommend leveraging the OTA (Over the Air) Firmware Upgrades to adjust deployed products to users’ needs.
But how can we discover the needs of our users?
Whenever I buy something online, I always get an email asking for feedback. Can you guess how many times I provided my opinion? Never.
Yet, I expect that users of my IoT solutions would invest their private time to share their feedback with me.
When I realized that, I thought there got to be a better way.
Tesla uses anonymized telemetry data to improve their firmware and hardware.
I am serious about my privacy, and I respect the privacy of others. I do not like the feeling that I am tracked.
But using anonymized telemetry data for the sole purpose of service improvement is fine with me. I know that companies are always tempted to use that data to (up)sell some additional products - that should not happen without explicit approval from the end user.
What is your opinion? Would you be ok with sharing truly anonymized usage data with the service provider?
